Columbus Day
My opinion on Columbus Day is that, while it is nice to have a day of rest, maybe we could rename it into something a little more politically correct. On the other hand is it really necessary to change it? It's been apart of our culture for so long and I really don't think that people allow Christopher Columbus, who has been dead for more than 400 years, to influce their decides on a day to day basis. I think that we should choose the day when America was discovered or the day when the pilgrims landed, then again that may be just as controversial. People will be upset no matter what is changed, it's impossible to please everyone so why not just leave it as is? It's worked for over 100 years so why don't we just leave it alone and let all the protests fade out. It really shouldn't be a debate, it's over and done, either accept your holiday, rename it, or just go to work anyway, there's not law saying you have to celebrate.

Rhetorical Context
Rhetorical context: this advertisement assumes that everyone is pretty done with magazines. It's attitude is faily negative, it is sop ding to the lack of interest in magazine ps and the lower subscription rate. It's audience we those who have lost faith in magazines . The unique tools used are the media used . The fact that they replaced the words with the magazines was an unusual trick that intents the buyer. It's something they may not have seen before. The audience to this wild be magazine readers o it's might not be as effective as they hoped, however because its so clever the magazine distributor could retain readers that might have left otherwise. This could be reading too much into it though. I think the purpose of the advertisement is to retain readers and add new readers because of the probable lack of subscriber gains that they're facing. Also implying a that I have headphones in when I don't is very hurtful and upsetting.

When Truth Survives Free Speech
I think that the article we read is a very good examples of FMI because itshows that if someone investigates and finds the truth it will come to light. This article is A good example of FMI because it proves that the truth will prevail. Even though there was intervention I don't think it affected the FMI because she started to defame the guy and that's not okay.

In the story I used for their news journal it detailed the way they thought Obama was failing on foreign policy. It was tastefully done, but it still showed free press because she could express her opionions and not be prosecuted. If the writers free speech was not protected I think that this writer would not have been able to publish her article because it is critical of the government. If it got through she would've had to you many more personal pronouns. If there was no free speech there would be no opposition pieces and that would be very boring. The only people that would benefit would benefit the political party in control.

What is News
News is important information being reported on. It doesn't have to be on television or in the newspaper, it could be the ladies at the country club talking abut how so and so got remarried to that awful women, or it could be you telling your friends about your new super cool new hat. News is reverent to the sharer and the their audience. Modern national and world news is too invasive in my opinion, when JFK was assassinated photographers immediately started to take pictures while Jackie Kennedy stood over him begging them to stop. I feel that that is far too invasive, people deserve their privacy.

Language and Mass Communication
In the dictionary language is defined as 'Communication by voice in a distinctly human manner, using arbitrary sounds in conventional way with conventional meanings; speech'. While this explains the basic principle of what language is; you can't put everything that language is into definition. It has far too many layers to even begin to explain the complexities and nuances of what it means to people. Language doesn't has to been written down or spoken, it can be hand gestures or subtle twists of people's bodies, it can be unintelligible sounds you make to your friends when you're describing something that you can't put into words, but they know what you mean anyway. Language is for showing what you're experiencing and how you feel things. You can use it for making sure your parents know exactly how you feel about your new curfew or telling your best friends about the super cool concert you went to. The ways in which you can use it are many and varied. Having, and being able to chose how to use language is one of the most powerful things you can have, it allows you to do anything and everything. Language is knowledge and there are no disadvantages to having it and using it.
Mass communication is how the spread of news or information is spread from one group of people to another. The different ways that you can share information are so numerous that writing them all would take forever. Currently the most prevelent are twitter, facebook and various news sites like Huffington Post and Fox.com. Mass communication is important because it helps keep people informed of world events and helps people form their own opionions on subjects that are often reported with bias. The pros of mass communications are that people can make friends all over the world without the normal boundaries that usually define them. People can also keep in contact with each other even if they moved thousands of miles away. The downside is that horrible ideas and people can find each other much more easily that they could before. Hover I believe that the pros far outweigh the cons.
